The case of a Hickman catheter-related bacteremia caused by Gordonia sputi in a patient with breast cancer is presented. Blood cultures grew a Gram-positive rod, susceptible to several antimicrobials, subsequently identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Gordonia sputi. The infection resolved after successful treatment with antibiotics and catheter removal.

Bacteremia and endocarditis caused by a Gordonia species in a patient with a central venous catheter.

We report the first case of endocarditis caused by a Gordonia species genetically related to G. sputi but exhibiting some atypical biochemical features in a 31-year-old woman with a central venous catheter. This unusual pathogen may be a new cause of opportunistic infections in patients with severe underlying diseases.

Emalyn is a newly isolated bacteriophage of Gordonia terrae 3612 and has a double-stranded DNA genome 43,982 bp long with 67 predicted protein-encoding genes, 32 of which we can assign putative functions.
